Protecting the air we breathe
The California Mobile Air Monitoring Initiative
Air Quality matters in
the communities along the
Carquinez Strait
Our communities face serious air pollution concerns, impacting residents’ health, the environment, and quality of life. Asthma rates in the “refinery row” region along the Carquinez Strait are many times higher than the state average. The Statewide Mobile Monitoring Initiative (SMMI)—led by Aclima and the California Air Resources Board (CARB)—is bringing mobile air quality monitoring to Vallejo, Rodeo, and parts of Crockett, and dozens of other California communities that suffer from poor air quality and a lack of local resources for pollution monitoring.
Throughout 2025 Aclima’s mobile monitors will measure air quality block by block, and we have the opportunity to tell them where to focus their monitoring efforts. The resulting data will help us understand local pollution sources and push for cleaner air in our region.
How Does Air Monitoring Work?
Aclima's vehicles will be driving through our towns to measure pollution levels.
The collected data will identify pollution hotspots and help advocate for stronger environmental protections.
Community input will shape the monitoring process—residents help decide where data is collected.
Who’s Leading the Effort?
The Rodeo Citizens Association (RCA) is taking the lead on local engagement for this initiative in Rodeo and Crockett. As a community-based organization, RCA is ensuring that residents’ voices are heard in shaping air monitoring and environmental policy. Follow them on Instagram for more updates on this initiative!
Citizen Air Monitoring Network (“CAMN”) is taking the lead on Vallejo outreach. CAMN was founded after the Phillips 66 Oil Spill incident in Rodeo that sent more than 100 people to the emergency rooms in Vallejo, and has been working to improve local air monitoring and community engagement ever since.
Our Children's Earth Foundation is supporting this effort by providing resources, outreach materials, and this campaign page to help spread awareness.

📊 Review the Data & Take Action
Once the data is collected, RCA, CAMN, OCE and the community will review the findings and push for pollution reduction measures.
